Mon, 12 March 2007 ![]() Howdy there little mushrooms. I recently received a comment on an older post requesting some songs by The Move and Idle Race. Well, if you like those two bands, then this will be the podcast for you. I have also included some live Great Society and some live Electric Prunes. Links of interest to the various bands are listed below so enjoy. Once again Jeff Lynne makes another appearance in this podcast, who is a member of Rock n' Roll royalty in my opinion, having been a member of The Move, The Idle Race, ELO, and Traveling Wilbury's. Damn. My apologies for the poor sound quality on the voice and the poor editing in some spots. I recently upgraded my recording software and am still ironing out the particulars of the volume and the editing portions. I hope to have those perfected by the next podcast. I'm thinking the next podcast will feature Pink Floyd so hang on for that. Anyone in the mood for a little live Atom Heart Mother? No? Well, you're getting it anyway!! Links:Rock n' Roll Family Tree: Ace Kefford (this is one disturbed and stylin' bass player). This site has a very cool and interesting bio that you should read. Title: Yeah, But I Like The Move Tracks: The Move: Here We Go Round the Lemon Tree Comments[60] |
Cream, Creation, The Pretty Things, Tomorrow, John's Children (feat. Marc Bolan of T. Rex), Barclay James Harvest, and Traffic. I was wondering if you can do the next podcast and play Os Mutantes, they're the ultimate brazilian psychedelic band that came out of Brazil, my favorite tracks that they did are; Panis Et Circenses, Bat Macumba, A Minha Menina, and Ando Mejo Desligado.
Keep up the good work!

.....Lynne, to me, is the quintessential mainstream rock vocal sound. He sounds uniformly good, from the Idle Race days, all the way up through the abortive 2001 "ELO" (really a Lynne solo effort, he plays nearly every part on the CD) release "Zoom."
.....Roy Wood, on the other hand, did not age so well. He's brilliant through at least 1970, but I honestly think he declined mentally from that point. If you've ever listened to the first ELO record (titled "No Answer" in the States), it has this really hard, unpleasant, abrasive string sound throughout. I'm pretty sure that was Wood's bit, and he played a lot of the parts. That sound disappeared on subsequent ELO releases. Search YouTube for 10538 Overture, and you'll hear what I mean, if the Google Gestapo haven't taken it down! The interesting thing to note about the string parts on that ELO record is how much they sound like early Metallica and Megadeth guitar parts, a decade earlier... Wood just doesn't have the same fire on later projects like Wizzard, to my ears.
.....Sunshine had some really excellent Wood guitar!
.....Sitting In My Tree is notable, because it contains some often reused themes throughout Lynne's career, most notably the descending bass line. Also prevalent is the shift on a particular chord from from major in one bar, to the same minor chord the next bar.
.....Honestly, there isn't that much of Lynne vocally, on these Race tracks, except for Big Chief. He can really sing the high notes. Getting high-end vocal harmonies to tape decently in the 1960s was nigh-impossible, and yet here are some good ones!
....."White Rabbit" and "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night" are serious rock anthems, and these early versions are a treat!
.....Rock On, indeed!
